Understanding HVAC Tonnage and BTUs

Properly sizing an air conditioning or heating unit is critical. An undersized unit will run constantly, driving up energy bills and failing to cool the room. An oversized unit will cool the room too quickly (short cycling), failing to remove humidity and leaving the space feeling cold and clammy.

What is a BTU?

BTU stands for British Thermal Unit. It is the amount of energy required to heat or cool one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit. In HVAC, it measures the heat-extraction (cooling) or heat-addition capacity of your system.

What is a "Ton" of Air Conditioning?

Before modern refrigerants, people cooled spaces with blocks of ice. A "Ton" of AC capacity is equal to the amount of heat required to melt a 1-ton block of ice in 24 hours. Mathematically, 1 Ton of cooling equals 12,000 BTUs per hour. Residential AC units typically range from 1.5 to 5 tons, stepping up in half-ton increments.

Rule of Thumb vs. Manual J

This calculator uses standard industry rules of thumb based on square footage, adjusting for insulation, sun exposure, and climate zone. While excellent for quick estimates and bidding, a formal "Manual J" calculation—which accounts for window types, exact ceiling heights, and ductwork efficiency—should be performed before final equipment installation.
