How to Estimate Fence Materials
Building a wooden privacy fence requires precise material calculation to avoid unnecessary delivery fees or mid-project hardware store runs. The three main components you need to estimate are your vertical posts, your horizontal rails, and your pickets.
1. Posts and Concrete
Fence posts provide the structural integrity of your fence. The standard spacing between posts is 8 feet, though 6 feet is often used for high-wind areas or heavier privacy fences. To calculate the number of posts, divide your total fence length by your post spacing, and always add one additional post to close off the final section. 2. Rails
The rails (typically 2x4 lumber) run horizontally between the posts to hold the pickets. A standard 6-foot privacy fence requires three rails per section (top, middle, and bottom) to prevent the pickets from warping over time.
3. Pickets
To calculate pickets for a solid privacy fence, convert your total fence length into inches, then divide by the actual width of your pickets.
