How to Calculate Drywall and Framing
Whether you are building a partition wall or finishing a basement, knowing how to properly estimate your materials saves multiple trips to the hardware store. The calculator above uses standard construction formulas to determine your requirements.
Drywall Panels
A standard piece of drywall is 4 feet wide by 8 feet tall, covering exactly 32 square feet. To find your requirement, multiply your wall length by your height to get the total area, and divide by 32. We automatically add a 10% waste buffer to account for cutting around windows, doors, and outlets.
Framing Studs
Framing estimation depends on your stud spacing. For a standard 16" on-center wall, you calculate vertical studs by converting the wall length to inches and dividing by 16 (then adding 1 for the end stud). You must also account for the top and bottom plates. A standard wall uses a single bottom plate and a double top plate, meaning you need three lengths of lumber spanning the entire distance of the wall.
